Jack-O'-Lantern
According to legend, Jack-o'-lanterns are an Irish/Celtic invention.
The story of jack-o'-lanterns tells us that when a blacksmith named Jack
died he was not welcome in heaven because he was a miser and was also
barred from hell for a trick he played on the Devil.
While standing before the Devil, he being the kind hearted soul we all know he
is
gave Jack a glowing ember straight from the fires of hell to light his way
Jack plopped his ember into a hollowed out turnip that he happened to be carrying.
Jack was doomed to wander Earth forever carrying his glowing
brimstone in a hollowed out
turnip.
It was common practice in Ireland to carve out vegetables to carry coals from house to house.
The vegetable lanterns were carved with scary carved features to ward off spirits.
When the Irish arrived in America, they soon found that pumpkins were
more
plentiful and made even better lanterns.
